Please complete this short form to continue:
Canterbury Cathedral is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and seat (‘Cathedra’) of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Its history goes back to 597AD when Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine, a monk, to establish Christianity in England. When in 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the Cathedral, Canterbury became one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage centres, as told most famously in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The Cathedral houses an 11thC Romanesque Crypt, 12thC Gothic Quire, 14thC Nave as well as the country’s most important collection of medieval stained glass windows.
